These newer lasers often incorporate a cooling device (cold spray or chilled tip) which first cools the epidermis before the laser is fired. This pre-cooling prevents the epidermis from damage, and significantly reduces patient downtime. The laser procedure can be safely performed with normal or no anesthesia and carries the risk of few complications. Several treatments are needed (usually 4-6), at 4-8 weeks intervals. The results of non-ablative laser treatment are gradual; the patient may see 15-20% improvement. The effects on shallower acne scars are better than on deeper ones.

Chemical Peeling
Repeated superficial chemical peeling, for example with glycolic acid, may mildly improve shallow acne scars by stimulating gradual remodeling of the collagen fibers in the upper dermis. Additional benefits include improvement in surface texture and fewer blackheads. Unfortunately, deep scars do not improve much with chemical peeling. Superficial chemical peeling should be performed by an experienced dermatologist to avoid complications, such as chemical burns to the skin.

How to Stop Acne

Filler Injections
Filler substances can be injected directly into the dermis below the scar, to elevate it for rapid, albeit temporary, improvement. Most fillers generally last about four to six months before absorption by the body. This technique can be considered for box-car type scars and rolling scars, especially if there are only a few isolated scars.

Dermabrasion
This technique, using a medical-grade sending device to manually remove the surface skin up to the upper dermis has largely been replaced by laser resurfacing as manual dermabrasion is a bloody procedure and is highly dependent on the skill and judgement of the doctor performing the procedure.

Hypertrophic and Keloidal Acne Scars
These are the thickened, cord-like scars resulting from excessive formation of scar tissue following active acne. Such scars appear more frequently in the Negroid race, and in individuals with a past history of keloids following skin injury. Hypertrophic and keloidal scars are also more common over the jaw line, anterior chest and shoulder regions. Treatment is difficult – partial flattening of the thickened scars can be achieved by techniques such as liquid nitrogen cryotherapy and careful injections of steroids into the scar by an experienced dermatologist. Over-the-counter scar cream and silicone gel sheeting are usually ineffective.

Hypertrophic and keloidal acne scars can be partially flattened with liquid nitrogen cryotherapy and steroids injections.

How to Stop Acne

How to Stop Acne - Post-acne Blemishes and Scars – Part 2

How to Stop Acne

Post-acne Blemishes and Scars – Part 2
Copyright © Zion

Acne Scars
The most important reason for treating acne early and effectively is that permanent scarring can occur if the inflammation is left too late. Acne scars, unlike post-acne redness and pigmentation, are permanent.

Unfortunately, current treatments for acne scars are costly, and only partially improve the scars. Scar treatment should only be considered for patients whose acne is well controlled dormant.

The Two Main Types of Acne Scars and their Treatment is as follows:

Depressed Acne Scars

These are the most common acne scars. They vary in appearance and depth. Dermatologists classify them as ice-pick scars (narrow, deep-pitted scars) box-car type scars (round, oval depressions with sharply demarcated vertical edges) and rolling scars (scars causing the skin to take on an undulating appearance) to fine-tune techniques of improving them. Most patients display a combination of the different types of acne scars.

How to Stop Acne

Total removal of acne scars is not possible but the following treatments may improve the appearance of depressed scars by making them shallower and their margins less distinct.

Scar Revision

Scar Revision (surgery) is necessary to improve the appearance of deep scars, for example, ice pick scars be cut-out (excised) and the skin stitched back to close up the scar. The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia and several sessions may be needed. Scar revision results in a shallow scar than originally; residual scars can subsequently be further improved by other non-surgical techniques.

Treatments for Acne Scars:

- Surgery
- Ablative Laser Resurfacing
- Non-ablative Laser Treatment
- Chemical Peeling
- Filler Injections
- Dermabrasion

How to Stop Acne

How to Stop Acne - Post-acne Blemishes and Scars – Part 1

How to Stop Acne

Post-acne Blemishes and Scars – Part 1
Copyright © Zion

Even after the active acne has subsided, post-acne blemishes may remain, including redness, pigmentation and scarring. These are more pronounced in poorly treated acne, or after self-manipulation like picking and squeezing. These blemishes often cause patients much concern and distress long after the active acne has subsided.

Post-acne Redness
After the inflammatory acne subsides, the area often turns a little red. This is normal, although it may last weeks to months for some patients. The redness results from the fine blood vessels that occur under the skin as part of the normal healing process, and appears more pronounced after the patient has been out in the sun on a hot day, and after he has used certain creams that may irritate the skin, such as topical tretinoin.

There are no creams that will effectively make the redness go away faster, although daily application of a sunscreen, sun protection (like hats), and avoidance of aggravating factors to will minimize it. The good news is that post-acne redness clear on its own and patients is all that is required. However, for those who are disturbed by the redness and want it to clear faster, the vascular specific laser – pulsed dye laser, or intense pulse light (IPL) therapy – may speed up the process. However, several sessions may be needed and treatment is often costly.

How to Stop Acne

Post-acne Pigmentation
For some patients, there may be pigmentation over sites of previous inflammation. The tendency to form pigmentation varies between each individual, although deeper and larger acne tends to leave more pigmentation as compared to more superficial and smaller lesions. The pigmentation may be aggravated by picking and squeezing, and by the use of certain oral medication such as the antibiotic minocycline.

Currently available lightening creams are only minimally effective in hastening the clearance of post-acne pigmentation, which can be rather deep. However, the pigmentation will gradually clear over the following weeks to months, and patients should concentrate on controlling their acne to minimize further post-inflammatory pigmentation. Chemical peeling, intense pulse light (IPL) therapy, and lasers should be avoided as they offer no additional benefit, and may in fact injure the skin and cause further pigmentation.

How to Stop Acne

How to Stop Acne - Common Myths About Acne – Part 2

How to Stop Acne

Common Myths About Acne – Part 2
Copyright © Zion

Myth # 5: All Make-up Should be Avoided

Looking presentable is an important part of personal grooming, which should also be very much part of life for people with acne. It is useful, however, to avoid oil-based make-up, especially occlusive foundations. Loose powder can be used without major problems. When shopping for skincare products or cosmetics, look-out for well established, reputable brands that have tested their products extensively and have labeled them to be non-comedogenic or specially formulated for oily skin.

Myth # 6: Sun Exposure Makes Acne Worse

There is no medical evidence to suggest that people with acne should stay away from the sun. However , excessive sun exposure may cause more severe post-acne pigmentation. Judicious use of non-oily sunscreen (at least SPF 15) is recommended to minimize sun-related problems.

How to Stop Acne

Myth # 7: Facial Treatments by Beauticians Help Clear Acne

Simple procedures that involve cleansing and extraction of blackheads (open comedones) are usually safe. However, indiscriminate squeezing of inflamed acne lesions or pimples must be avoided. Also, the skills of beauticians or aestheticians in different salons vary tremendously. Facial treatments are generally not essential in the overall treatment of acne nor a fundamental way on how to stop acne.

Myth # 8: Oil Blotters are Bad for Acne

There is no good evidence to suggest that oil blotters make acne worse or that they cause more oil to be produced. The effect of removing excess oil from the skin with blotting paper is temporary, it reduces the shine caused by the excess oil on the surface of the skin.

Myth # 9: Antibiotics Should be Avoided as They are Bad for the Body

Oral antibiotics may be necessary to control the inflammation of severe acne that fails to respond adequately to topical treatment. They have proven effective, and have been used with good safety records for periods of more than 30 years without any long-term harm to the body. Your body will closely monitor your progress while you are on oral antibiotics and will stop acne treatment once the inflammatory lesions are cleared. There is no need to be on maintenance oral antibiotics for fear of relapses.

How to Stop Acne

How to Stop Acne - Common Myths About Acne - Part 1

How to Stop Acne

Common Myths About Acne - Part 1
Copyright © Zion

There are many myths about acne which often create added anxiety for the sufferer. Certain practices may aggravate the acne or even cause more complications, such as scarring and pigmentation. And in this case, some of the ways on how to stop acne that have been learned by the sufferers are just wasted because most of them believe in those myths.

Myth # 1: Certain Foods Make Acne Worse

In the Asian culture, the right food nourishes the body and the wrong food is often regarded as a cause of many ailments. Oily, greasy, deep-fried food, chocolates, nuts and sweets have been implicated in acne flares. This myth is prevalent among the young and old. However, to date, there is no scientific evidence that diet plays an important role in causing acne; rigid food restriction is unnecessary. For general health benefits, a well-balanced diet rich in fiber and low in fats, salt and refined sugar is recommended.

How to Stop Acne

Myth # 2: Dark Foods Cause Pigmentation After Acne

Parents (especially Chinese) often advise their children to avoid taking dark-colored foods such as soy sauce and coffee, to prevent black marks (pigmentation) from appearing during the healing process. In fact, the pigmentation results from the inflammation, rather than from staining by the food. This post inflammatory pigmentation is common after any form of injury to the skin and is a predisposition of the darker Asian skin. This topic is further discussed later.

Myth # 3: Squeezing Pimples Helps Unblock Pores and Aids Healing

This unhealthy practice often results in greater inflammation and damage to the skin. Instead of faster healing. Scars tend to be deeper, and post-acne pigmentation tends to be darker and more prolonged.

Myth # 4: Poor Skin Hygiene Causes Acne

The cause of acne has been well studied and is explained earlier. Acne is not caused by poor skin hygiene, and certainly can not be washed away. This myth often leads to vigorous and excessive cleaning of the face with harsh medicated soap or abrasive skin cleansers, which results in additional irritation, redness and soreness of the skin. Gentle cleansing two or three times each day with a mild soap is recommended. This will help remove excessive oil (sebum) on the surface of the skin without causing unwanted irritation.

How to Stop Acne

How to Stop Acne - Factors that Make Acne Worse – Part 2

How to Stop Acne

Factors that Make Acne Worse – Part 2
Copyright © Zion

F. Cosmetics

Most people can use cosmetics without any side effects, but a small group of users develop cosmetic acne, which usually presents as small, raised whiteheads or small, inflamed papules and pustules over the face where the products has been applied. And because other people are not aware, it has been very difficult for them to find ways on how to stop acne caused by those.

Some cosmetics can cause acne breakouts that occur months from the start of use.
A woman with cosmetic acne is caught in a vicious cycle: the more she breaks out, the more make-up she uses to cover it up, which only leads to worsening of the acne.

Ingredients in cosmetics that may aggravate acne include lanolin, analogs of isopropyl myristate, algae extract, cocoa butter, laurenth-4, lauric acid, octyl palmitate, coconut oil and D&C red pigments. Practically speaking, it is difficult to remember all the ingredients in cosmetics that may aggravate acne. As a general rule, it is best to use cosmetics from well-established, reputable companies that have tested their products extensively and have labeled them
non-comedogenic.

Factors that Aggravate Acne:

Picking and Squezzing- Stress- Thick, greasy or comedogenic cosmetics

Steroid Creams

Certain Drugs

Heat and Humidity

Certain Chemicals

How to Stop Acne

G. Climate

Acne tends to worsen in hot, humid climates and work environments, such as kitchens and steam rooms. Why heat and humidity have such an aggravating effect on acne is not exactly known. We do know, however, that the outer layer of the skin (stratum corneum) swells tremendously under humid conditions. The pressure from the swelling could block the opening of the pilo-sebaceous unit and cause acne to develop.

An artificial source of steam may also aggravate acne. Many people who use facial steaming devices believe they are ‘opening the pores’ – they may actually be swelling them shut.

H. Occupation

Jobs that involve contact with certain chemicals may also worsen acne. These chemicals include insoluble cutting oils (in the engineering and manufacturing industries), crude petroleum (in oil refining industry), diesel oil (in motor mechanics) and halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons (in industries manufacturing conductors and insulators, and insecticides, fungicides and herbicides)

All these factors contributes to acne worsening. Avoiding all mentioned factors above can even help any individuals to stop acne no matter how bad it is, its just a matter of discipline and knowledge on how strong are you to avoid all these things. If you are serious in seeking ways on how to stop acne, prevention is the best thing to do first while it is not yet worst.

How to Stop Acne

How to Stop Acne - Factors that Make Acne Worse – Part 1

How to Stop Acne

Factors that Make Acne Worse – Part 1
Copyright © Zion

Certain factors are known to cause or aggravate acne. Avoiding these factors contributes to better treatment results and eventually stop acne permanently, as well as preventing relapses after successful treatment.

A. Picking and Squeezing

It is common to pick at acne lesions and squeeze out the retained sebaceous materials, under the mistaken impression that this will unblock the pore and speed up healing. In fact, this often causes unnecessary skin injury, introduces bacteria, and worsens inflammation. The result is often darker, deeper and more permanent scars.

B. Premenstrual Flares

Women may complain of acne flares just before their menses. These premenstrual flares affect up to 40% of women with acne, and are related to normal fluctuations in hormone levels over the menstrual cycle. The flares usually resolve quickly after the menses end. The regular use of topical anti-acne creams may help reduce premenstrual flares.

How to Stop Acne

C. Stress

Acne often worsens during periods of stress, worry, anxiety and tension. A recent study by researchers from Stanford University published in the July 2003 Archives of Dermatology reported that acne in a group of students deteriorated with increasing stress levels in the examination period, suggesting that changing hormones and neuroactive substances produced during stress may have a significant influence on acne. Flares during stressful periods are probably also exacerbated by failure to use the anti-acne creams regularly. To prevent and minimize such flares, patients should learn stress reduction and relaxation techniques and diligently apply anti-acne creams daily over acne-prone areas, even if they have no breakouts.

D. Creams and Medicaments

Certain creams and medicaments may make acne worse, including some medicated creams and thick, oily creams. Topical steroids, often prescribe to treat eczema, may lead to a breakout if used excessively and inappropriately. This type of acne is often characterized by multiple red, inflamed monomorphic papules and pustules.

E. Drugs

Some drugs are well documented as aggravators or even causes acne. These include corticosteroids given either orally or by injections, lithium for treating manic-depressive illness and testosterone pills/injections which may ba used by professional athletes and bodybuilders to increase muscle mass. Danazol, sometimes given to women for endometriosis (growth of tissue from the uterus in parts of the body other than the uterus), similar in effect to testosterone and can aggravate acne. Avoiding all these drugs will definitely help you stop acne. It doesn’t matter how good these drugs are but bear in mind that all drugs can make acne worse, and that’s a fact.

How to Stop Acne

How to Stop Acne - Acne Through the Ages

How to Stop Acne

Acne Through the Ages
Copyright © Zion

Acne occurs most commonly after puberty and affects adolescents and young adults. However, it can also occur during infancy, and even in adulthood . Although its appearance may vary at different ages, the basic lesions of comedones, inflamed papules and pustules remain the same. And the methods on how to stop this acne is definitely the same.

Neonatal Period (First Month of Life)

Hyperactivity of oil-producing glands stimulated by androgens at birth and in the following few weeks, may cause acne in the first month of life. This is known as neonatal acne. Males are more often affected than females. Comedones and red inflamed papules and pustules are seen, mainly on the cheeks, The eruption is usually mild and clears after a few months.

Childhood

Infantile acne starts later, at around 3-24 months of age, and tends to be more severe and persistent, lasting many months or up to 5 years of age. Non-inflamed comedones predominate, with inflamed lesions such as papules, pustules and even nodules, occurring mainly on the cheeks. Scarring occasionally results. If it is severe and persistent, or if its onset occurs after the age of one. An underlying hormonal abnormality should be ruled out.

Pre-pubertal children may start developing comedones and an oily complexion from about 10 years of age, heralding the onset of puberty.

How to Stop Acne

Adolescence

This is the usual age where acne sets in. It is often preceded by increasingly oily skin and formation of whiteheads and blackheads, culminating in the appearance of red, inflamed papules and pustules on the forehead and cheeks. Sometimes acne may involved the chest and back (truncal acne). Most adolescents will have at least a few acne lesions at some time or other. In more severe cases, nodules and cysts develop, resulting in scarring and disfiguration.

Adolescence is the most common age where acne starts to appear. At this stage, acne frequently recurs, even after treatment. However, the majority of acne sufferers will notice improvement or resolution in early adulthood.

Adulthood

Acne is widely regarded as a problem of adolescence, and in most cases, resolves by early adulthood (mid-twenties). However, about 15% of male acne sufferers, particularly those with more severe facial and truncal acne, continue to suffer fro it well into adulthood; that is, past their thirties. The jaw line, chin upper chest, and back are sites that are preferentially affected in adulthood.

About one-third of female acne sufferers will continue to have acne persisting into adulthood, mostly in a low-grade form with premenstrual flares, that occur around the period of menstruation. Adult acne tends to stop by menopause in women or the equivalent in men.

How to Stop Acne

How to Stop Acne - Mimics of Acne

How to Stop Acne

Mimics of Acne
Copyright © Zion

Mimics of acne are skin conditions that may look acne at first glance, but which are not. These skin conditions often do not respond well to standard acne treatment and require different treatments. Your dermatologist is trained to distinguish acne from mimics and should be consulted if you have any doubts.

Rosacea

Early rosacea is characterized by flushing and blushing with sun exposure, alcohol, spicy food, and strong emotions. Later, inflamed papules and pustules resembling acne may appear, together with persistent redness of the face, visible fine blood vessels and swelling of the skin. In the late stage in men, the nose may become enlarged and deformed.

Steriod-induced Acne

Acne induced by the prolonged use of steroid creams on the skin, or the ingestion of steroid tablets, or by repeated injections of steroids, differ from regular acne in that the lesions tend to be monomorphic (uniform in size and appearance). Inregular acne, a variety of different acne lesions (non-inflamed comedones and inflamed papules, pustules, nodules and cysts) are present at any one time.

Perioral Dermatitis

The patient has acne –like papules and pustules appearing symmetrically around the mouth while the rest of the face and often results from prolonged inappropriate use of steroid creams.

How to Stop Acne

Gram-negative Bacterial Folliculitis

The condition is due to infection of the hair follicles by gram-negative bacteria. It often shows up as multiple small, inflamed, pus-filled lesions that do not respond to standard acne antibiotics. It may be a complication of repeated antibiotic acne treatments.

Pityrosporum Folliculitis

This is caused by the infection of the hair follicles by a yeast called Malassezia furfur (previously called Pityrosporum Ovale). Small red papules and pustules centered around hair follicles are seen on the shoulders, back and chest. The lesions are monomorphic and develop suddenly over a short period of time. Young, healthy adults involved in high levels of physical activity, with increased sweating and occlusion are usually affected.

Pseudofolliculitis

Pseudofolliculitis occurs mostly in men with kinky or curly hair, in hair-bearing areas such as the chin. It arises when the tip of shaved hair pierces the hair follicle wall, causing inflammation.

Keratosis Pilaris

This common condition involves rough red bumps around the hair pores on the upper arms and thighs. It tends to be persistent and is associated with dry skin and atopic dermatitis.

How to Stop Acne

How to Stop Acne - Special Underlying Medical Conditions Associated With Acne

How to Stop Acne

Special Underlying Medical Conditions Associated With Acne
Copyright © Zion

Some medical conditions may cause or aggravate acne. Patients with these medical conditions often have more severe acne that does not respond well to standard treatment.

Androgen Excess

Acne in females, if accompanied by irregular periods, excessive hairiness and oiliness, male-pattern baldness, and deepening of the voice, is suggestive of androgen

- Polycystic ovarian syndrome
This is the most common cause of androgen excess in women, where the ovaries are large and contain many cysts, resulting in an imbalance in the hormones produced by the ovaries. The affected woman has oily skin, acne and irregular menstrual periods. She is also usually obese, hairy and sub-fertile.

- Androgen-secreting ovarian or adrenal tumours

- Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (21-hydroxylase deficiency)
The lack of the enzyme 21-hydroxylase in the adrenal glands (special glands found just above the kidneys) causes an overproduction of precursor hormones with androgenic properties. More severe and classical forms of this condition are usually detected during infancy. Non-classical or late-onset forms may occur with symptoms of androgen excess and acne during childhood or after puberty.

How to Stop Acne

Cushing’s Syndrome

This condition results from too much cortisol (a glucocorticoid hormone) in the body. This may result from an excess production of the hormone by the body, from prolonged ingestion of steroid tablets (prednisolone, dexamethasone), or from repeated injections of steroids for other skin or medical conditions (for example, eczema, or asthma)

Cushing’s Syndrome is characterized by obesity affecting the face (moon face), neck (buffalo hump) and body but not the limbs. Apart from acne, excessive growth of facial and body hair, skin thinning, fragility and easy bruising, purplish stretch marks (striae) are often signs of Cushing’s Syndrome as well.

How to Stop Acne

How to Stop Acne - Diagnosis of Acne

How to Stop Acne

Diagnosis of Acne
Copyright © Zion

Clinical diagnosis of acne is based on history and the presence of characteristics lesions. Special tests are not required. Your doctor will be able to help you and teach you proven methods on how to stop acne.

Diagnostic Criteria

To diagnose your condition as acne, your doctor will first examine your skin and confirm that the blemishes are those of acne. The characteristic lesions are non-inflamed comedones (whiteheads and black heads) and inflamed lesions consisting of papules, pustules, nodules and cysts. These most occur together in characteristic oil-producing areas such as the face, upper back and upper chest in the typically affected age group, namely adolescents and young adults. And they are the ones who are active on searching a proven way on how to stop acne.

During the consultation, your doctor will also analyze aggravating factors and rule out special underlying conditions associated with acne, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome and Cushing’s Syndrome.

Your doctor will also assess the severity of your acne and determine your responses to previous treatments given, so that he can plan the best strategy on how to stop your acne.

Are Special Blood and Skin Tests Needed?

Special blood and skin tests are not routinely required. However, in situations where your doctor suspects that your skin condition is not a typical case of acne, he may order certain special tests. These are usually carried out to include mimics of acne and to identify underlying medical conditions that may cause or aggravate acne.

How to Stop Acne

Some Tests Include:

A. Skin Smear for Microscopy

This is done to identify bacteria or yeast when gram-negative folliculitis – inflammation of the follicle – or pityrosporum (a type of yeastlike fungi) folliculitis is suspected. (Gram’s stain is a method of treating bacteria with dyes; gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria show different stains, due to differences in the structure and composition of the cell walls.) A swab from affected skin is smeared on a glass slide, which is then stained with special chemicals and examined under a microscope to demonstrate the causative organism.

B. Skin Smear for Bacterial Culture

A smear from the affected skin is plated on a special medium that allows the causative bacteria to grow. The bacteria can then be identified and its susceptibility to various antibiotics, or antibiotic sensitivity, determined. This test is to identify the bacteria in gram-negative bacterial folliculitis so the doctor can decide on the most suitable antibiotic to stop acne infection.

C. Hormonal Blood Tests

This test screen for hormonal disorders in females with difficult to stop acne in the presence of irregular menstrual periods and hirsutism (male-pattern hair distribution in females). They include the raios of serum dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEAS), total and free testosterone and luteinising hormone (LH), to follicular stimulating hormone (FSH). If the results are abnormal, your doctor will refer you to an endocrinologist or gynaecologist for a more detailed evaluation and assessment.

With these procedures, it is posible to determine the cause easily, and affected persons would have enough time to do effective ways on how to stop acne without much trouble.

How to Stop Acne

How to Stop Acne - The Role of Genes and External Factors in Causing Acne

How to Stop Acne

The Role of Genes and External Factors in Causing Acne
Copyright © Zion

Genetic factors play an important role in acne, although which genes exactly are involved have yet to be identified. It is likely that a combination of genes from both parents is responsible. And by identifying this factors would be a very big help to be able to know how to stop such acne.

It is often observed that several members of the same family have acne, albeit to varying degrees. Identical twins are usually both affected by acne, while such an incidence is much less for non-identical twins. If one or both parents has or had a severe acne, then the child is at risk of also developing severe acne in his teens. The methods how their parents stop their acne should be taught carefully to them.

External factors also play a role in aggravating and/or causing acne. These includes a hot, humid climate, stress, picking and squeezing at the lesions, medicaments, drugs, cosmetics, and occupation. These factors should ideally be minimized in the overall management of acne.

How to Stop Acne

Severity Grades of Acne

1. Mild Acne

In mild acne, the degrees of inflammation is minimal, with mainly comedones and small, inflamed papules and pustules. The risk of scarring in mild acne is low. There is often associated increased oiliness (seborrhoea) of the skin.

2. Moderate Acne

In moderate acne, the degrees of inflammation is more intense. In addition to comedones and increased oiliness of the skin there are many inflamed papules and pustules. There maybe a few nodules present as well. The risk of scarring increases with the degree of inflammation.

3. Severe Acne

In severe acne, the inflammation is very intense and extends deep into the skin, with multiple nodules and cysts. The individual lesions may merge to form larger confluent lesions and pus-filled tracts (sinuses). The inflamed nodules tend to be painful, and discharging pus is often seen. Over-the-counter acne creams are generally ineffective against severe acne. As there is great risk of scarring in severe acne, patients should seek early medical advice on how to stop of acne of this grade, so that the inflammation can be reduced rapidly.

How to Stop Acne

How to Stop Acne - How Common Is Acne?

How to Stop Acne

How Common Is Acne?
Copyright © Zion

Acne is extremely common, affecting about 4 in 5 (80%) of adolescents and young adults aged 11 to 30 years. And most of the people of different ages affected by ance never give up researching for the best ways on how to stop it.

Although acne usually first appears during the teenage years, it can occur for the first time in one's twenties or thirties. It is one of the most common skin disorders treated by doctors at Skin Centers around the world. And association of doctors are continouosly formulating effective medicines and methods on how to stop acne which has been the cause of most teenager's problem.

How Does Acne Form?

Acne formation is a complex interplay between genetics, hormones, excessive sebum production, blockage of pore openings, bacteria and the body's immune response. Studying ways on how to stop the cause are bit sensitive and need plenty of time, same as healing someone's acne when it is already acute.

Acne begins at the pilo-sebaceous unit (the oil-producing gland and associated hair follicle). Around puberty, the sebaceous glands grow in size and start producing more sebum under the influence of increased amounts of androgens (male sex hormones) circulating in the body. Androgens are present in both males and females, though males have higher levels of it.

How to Stop Acne

While the enlarged sebaceous the increased and abnormal growth of the cells lining the opening of the pilo-sebaceous unit results in clogging of the opening, causing retention of the sebum and dead skin cells - sebaceous materials - under the skin. The retained sebaceous materials result in the formation of whiteheads (closed comedones) and blackheads (open comedones): the early, non-inflamed lesions of acne.

The retained sebaceous materials provide a good environment for the bacterium (Propionibacterium acnes) to grow and multiply. The body's immune response to the bacteria and its products leads to inflammation, and the formation of red, sometimes painful, pimples. Deeper more intense inflammation results in the formation of larger lesions (nodules) and even pus-filled cavities (cysts).

While the inflammation helps clear the bacteria from the skin, it unfortunately destroys tissue around the pilo-sebaceous glands. This may cause permanent scarring as a final result of the healing process.

How to Stop Acne

Inflammation in Acne Produces Troublesome Lesions:

1. Papules - inflamed lesions that usually appear as small, pink bumps on the skin and can be tender to the touch

2. Pustules (pimples) - papules topped by pus-filled lesions that may be red at the base

3. Nodules - large painful, solid lesions that are lodged deep within the skin

4. Cysts - deep, painful pusfilled lesions that can cause scarring

Understanding the various steps in acne formation has allowed doctors and researchers to develop better ways on how to stop acne at different levels, with better results. The trend is towards early treatment, and preventing or minimizing inflammation, thereby preventing scarring.

How to Stop Acne

How to Stop Acne - What is Acne Vulgaris?

How to Stop Acne

What is Acne Vulgaris?
Copyright © Zion

Acne is an inflammatory disease of the oil- or sebum-producing glands of the skin, resulting in the formation of whiteheads, blackheads and red, inflamed bumps that may contain pus, and all these problems that have been formed can be avoided if you know how to stop the inflammation of the oil-producing glands that caused acne.

These sebaceous (oil-producing) glands are found in association with hair follicles, and are collectively known as the pilo-sebaceous unit. Acne usually starts to appear during puberty (at 10-13 years of age), when the sebaceous glands become more active due to stimulation by male sex hormones, or androgens. The face, neck, upper back, and chest carry an abundance of sebaceous glands consequently they are the most commonly affected areas of the body.

How to Stop Acne

Although acne may not cause or lead to serious medical problems or physical harm, its psychosocial impact can be tremendous . Adolescents and young adults who suffer from severe acne often have a poorer quality of life due to diminished self-image and negative perception by peers. Acne scars persist into adulthood and may have continued negative psychosocial effects years after the active acne has subsided.

The good news is that modern medicine have the formula and the best method on how to stop acne effectively, which in turn minimizes the problem of scarring. It is not a minor skin problem that can be ignored and left to go away as one grows older. I know my
summer has been, as I have been traveling around talking to many
people about my secrets on how to stop acne, during my book
signings and television interviews.

The reason for my email today is I just recently came across an
article in WebMD Magazine, which talked about whether or not name
brand and all-naturally labeled skin care products really work. In
addition to the fact that 70% of all name brand sunscreens they
tested did not work correctly to protect the skin, and also can not
help people to stop acne.

They found that the harmful additives in most skin care products as
well as many products that claim to be "all-natural" (but really
are not) is not good at all for your skin. It begs the question,
"Do you really know what you are putting on your skin?"

So many products these days are labeled all-natural and yet contain
mineral oils, phosphates, urea, and sulfates that actually dry out
and kill skin cells. They are no healthier to use on your skin than
the common products found on the chain store shelves.

The problem is so large that the FDA is now looking at regulating
the labeling of such products, so that their claims have to be
backed up by verifiable results. I agree with their sentiment
completely.

I'll use a simple mud mask as an example. While no one would go out
and dig up some bacteria laden soil in the backyard and slather it
on their face, there are products claiming to be all-natural that
are clearly not good for you.

They have not been tested properly and more than likely will not
meet what will soon be the new FDA test for safety and
effectiveness. No wonder so many of these products create more
problems instead of correcting them!

We live in an exciting time where nature and science can come
together and truly create all-natural products that are stabilized
and highly effective. This is exactly what happened when I got
together with a leading dermatologist who also believed and used
all-natural approaches to caring for the skin, and our creation was
Ginalé.

It meets both tests of providing you real results you can truly see
and having the highest standards of any other all-natural product
available today.

Ginalé was designed to replace the everyday products you already
use, to provide an all-natural skin care regimen that would create
the necessary environment for your skin to heal itself and stay
healthy and young-looking. This line accomplishes these goals by
assisting your skin in increasing its cellular turnover rate.

The ingredients are made from things like olive oil and glycerin
that won't harm skin cells. They are so effective that the products
often last for two months or more, which can really save you
money in addition to saving your skin while doing the best method
on how to stop acne and prevent it forever.

How to Stop Acne

How to Stop Acne - Lesson 8

How to Stop Acne

Copyright © Chris Gibson
Acne Free In 3 Days

I wanted to drop you a short post today to pass on some exciting
news. Due to the
fact I have been traveling the last few days, I almost missed it!

If you did not know, this is the company that makes the number one
product I recommend for removing the deep layers of damaged skin,
age spots, uneven skin tone... and even for stopping acne scarring!

There is no other product like this and it is what I have been
using for several years now to maintain outer skin health, and get
the deep exfoliation necessary for skin rejuvenation. This is how I
removed years of deep acne scarring when nothing else worked.

I have received many requests about this product and interestingly
enough, I just spent several days speaking with television anchors
concerned about how they look now that everything is going digital
and high definition, and what they could do to dramatically improve
the look of their skin since they cannot wear as much makeup now. The
men were more concerned that the women! :)

Well, I recommended the Skin Culture USA Peel, and in fact it is
the only thing I would recommend when a complete regeneration of
the complexion is required when you are done with all the tips
on how to stop acne. Especially if you're trying to improve
the evenness of your skin from acne and it's scarring.

How to Stop Acne

How to Stop Acne - Lesson 6

How to Stop Acne

Copyright © Chris Gibson
Acne Free In 3 Days

I wanted to follow up with you now that you have had an opportunity
to receive and hopefully put to use my 5 basic secrets to clearing
your skin. I appreciate all the wonderful feedback I have received
on how educational and useful this information is and that is what
I wanted to accomplish - helping you to understand some of the very
basic principles on how to stop acne.

Many have said they want to go further and actually have the clear
and radiant skin I speak of as being possible. It is possible! I
know that acne is very debilitating. I know this personally as I
struggled for many years with it. I have been blessed though in
finding the answer and being able to share it with so many other
people who wanted to learn how to stop acne.

That is why I wrote "Acne Free in 3 Days" in the first place. I was
reluctant to write about it at first, but my family and friends who
had suffered (as all of us who battle acne have suffered) insisted
and encouraged me to share my story. More importantly, they wanted
me to share the natural and inexpensive way to "win the battle"
over acne.

How to Stop Acne

I know you can easily get trapped in to taking expensive drugs and
endless programs of products that provide no real, long-term
relief. I know it gets confusing when researching and trying to
decide what to do.

I am going to tell you that you can make a choice here today that
can literally change your life... just like it changes the lives of
so many day after day... year after year. Take this recent clients
letter to me:

"Chris, WOW! I followed your instructions for the full 3 days, and
I woke up this morning to the best surprise of my life! It's simply
amazing how much my skin cleared up between last night and this
morning...it's a miracle! I have been suffering from acne since the
age of 12, and being 22 now, I figured I was pretty much stuck with
it until I got much older. I have spent hundreds of dollars on
over-the-counters, medications, and dermatologists - and nothing
ever helped calm my acne like this. Also, my skin used to be very
dry and pink in tone...now it's peachy and has a "glow" to it! I
can't thank you enough for sharing this wonderful and easy program.
I feel like me again!"

Julie McCartan, 22
Milwaukee, Wisconsin

THIS CAN BE YOU STARTING RIGHT NOW! Friends you already have
my 5 secrets on how to stop acne. Now it is time to take action
and get the whole story. All you have to do is simply use the same
methods I use to have an Acne Free life!

How to Stop Acne

How to Stop Acne - Lesson 5

How to Stop Acne

Copyright © Chris Gibson
Acne Free In 3 Days

I hope these articles have been informative and helpful. By now you
should be getting a good understanding of the simple steps on
how to stop acne and have a healthy glowing skin.

Last time we talked a little about diet and how it relates on
how to stop acne for a clearer skin. I gave you the third secret
of cutting the sugars from your diet. I hope you have thought
about this decision and given it a chance. If you do, you will
find out as I did that the long-term results you will receive
will be incredible.

In this email I would like to focus a little more on what you are
feeding yourself and your skin. I will not be telling you to cut
anything else out of your diet, but to add more of two very
important nutrients back in.

Basic Secret #4: Get Plenty Vitamin C & Water

Everyone has heard that old saying, "An apple a day keeps the
doctor away." Well I will go much further than that and tell you
that what you put in your mouth has a huge impact on the overall
health of your skin... your largest organ!

In my book, "Acne Free in 3 Days," I go to great lengths on this
subject. However, what I can reveal to you today is that the most
important supplement you need to make sure you have in your diet is
Vitamin C.

How to Stop Acne

Vitamin C is responsible for the skins overall functional and most
importantly, its ability to repair itself and produce/maintain
collagen. You can take Vitamin C easily enough, but you should try
to add foods containing high levels of Vitamin C to your diet.

Some examples include spinach and broccoli (both also rich in
Iron), citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, and limes (I like to
put a slice in my water), and even potatoes which have 25 mgs of
Vitamin C.

You can find out exactly how much Vitamin C I recommend for you to
take daily by getting my book, but everyone should at a minimum be
getting the RDA amount of 60 mgs to avoid deficiency problems like
scurvy. You can get the same Vitamin C I use by following through
to the next link.

How to Stop Acne

Drinking plenty of water on a daily basis helps to maintain the
skin's elasticity, and is simply just essential to the health of
your body and skin. One of the main activities of the body's
self-healing system is to filter the blood, a job performed mostly
by the kidneys, with help from the skin in the form of
perspiration.

This self-healing system removes the toxic wastes of metabolizing
food and of other harmful substances that get into our bodies one
way or another. This purification system operates efficiently only
if the volume of water flowing through it is sufficient to carry
away the wastes.

Drinking 8 to 10 glasses (64 fluid ounces) of water a day is the
recommendation. To reach your quota, carry bottled water with you
in your car, your purse, your briefcase -- wherever you go.

By following the basic steps I have outlined so far in the past
four emails, you should be well on your way to creating the maximum
environment for great looking skin. By now you should know to use a good SPF 30 product (one
that protects both UVA and UVB rays), such as the SPF 30 found by
clicking on the next link, which is what I love to use. This one tip is
really useful in your quest on how to stop acne.

How to Stop Acne

More importantly, during summer our skin is exposed to more
environmental stress than at any other time of year. Your skin also
sweats more and produces more oils this time of year.

All of this can lead to increases in breakouts, rashes, and
over-sensitive skin. Many of us are more prone to get deeper acne
breakouts and so on, but it does not have to be this way.

While I talk about these environmental issues at length and what
you can immediately do about them in my book, I wanted to share a
few tips here again with you.

First, you need to be sure you are using a glycerin or sorbitol
based facial soap or wash. This way, you get clean without leaving
a waxy residue on the skin that can actually block pores and cause
more skin issues.

Secondly, you need to use a good antiseptic for treating any small
cuts, scrapes, or breakouts, such as all-natural tea tree oil. This
is what I use with great success. All of the things I use and
recommend can be easily found by following through to the next link.

How to Stop Acne

Another thing to look at is the change in the diet that people
usually experience in the summer months. Avoiding sugary foods and
replacing them with complex carbohydrates for energy can play a key
role in maintaining healthy skin.

Summer is a great time to show off great skin. If your skin is not
where you want it to be, then I would recommend for you to follow
the tips I have listed above along with the basic secrets you have
already received.

I would also strongly recommend for you to get a copy of Acne Free
in 3 Days, as it will take you further in your acne education and
provide you with a great natural program on how to stop acne in
just 3 days.

How to Stop Acne

How to Stop Acne - Lesson 3

How to Stop Acne

Copyright © Chris Gibson
Acne Free In 3 Days

I hope you are finding these letters helpful to you in your quest
on how to stop acne and have a clear and radiant skin. Last time
I talked about one of themost important secrets to clearing your
skin, regular exfoliation. I hope you were able to apply the advice
and are now reaping the immediate rewards.

Now I told you there would be five basic secrets that I would
reveal to you. Today I want to talk a little bit about diet and
acne. No matter where I go, I always get asked about diet in
relation to the skin. Does diet play any role at all in skin
health? You bet it does!

Did you realize that there are almost no mentions of skin disorders
reported in the ancient texts of time? Only leprosy and infection
are given their proper context.

Acne I believe is primarily a 20th Century disease. Our pollution
levels, poor eating habits, and overuse of antibiotics have allowed
yeast (Candida Albicans) to get out of control.

How to Stop Acne

The results? Acne is fairly limited to western civilization but is
becoming more of a problem as other cultures incorporate processed
foods into their eating habits. There are over 17 million chronic
acne sufferers in the United States alone...and 1 in 3 will have to
deal with some form of it in their lifetime.

My own experience also says yes! Absolutely diet affects your skin.
I can remember a time when I could down a regular Coca Cola and my
acne would begin to redden and intensify in less than five minutes!
It was reacting to the sugar in the cola.

In my book, "Acne Free in 3 Days," I talk at great lengths providing
scientific evidence on food and its relationship to being healthy
and how your skin looks.

How to Stop Acne

There are specific changes you can make today for the long term to
have better overall health and skin. What is one of the diet
secrets for having great looking skin I want to share with you
today?

Basic Secret #3: Cut the Sugars

Lowering sugar intake is one of the main keys of skin health.
Although food does make a difference that can be dramatic, did you
also know certain foods can be healers as well?

The fantastic discovery I made that you can use food (one of the
components in my book) to help you eliminate acne permanently has
benefited so many people - myself included.

You now have 3 key basic secrets that will help you to improve your
health and rejuvenate your skin! Starting today, I recommend for
you to cut out as much sugar as you can from your diet. The
results you will receive over a period of time will be remarkable.

If you would like to learn all of my secrets today along with
how to stop acne in just three days, then follow through
this link ---> Acne Free In 3 Days

How to Stop Acne

How to Stop Acne - Lesson 2

How to Stop Acne

Copyright © Chris Gibson
Acne Free In 3 Days

I promised I would post my next basic secret on how to stop
acne and here it is! Last time I talked about making a simple
change to the type of soap or face wash you are currently using. I
hope you were able to visit our site below and learn more about the
all-natural glycerin based soaps we have available.

How to Stop Acne

I am sure you have probably already heard that besides washing
regularly, there are three other steps you can take to help get
clear skin. The first step would be using a toner, while the
second step would be using a good moisturizer.

Although I would agree with finding and using a good moisturizer
if you have normal or dry skin, it would not be recommended to be
used for oily or even combination skin. In my case, I have found
most facial skin toners to be completely useless.

I do not even use a moisturizer very often because I have combination
skin. Whether you use either of the above steps mentioned is going
to depend on your skin type and personal results.

However, the third step is a critical one everyone should be following. It
does not matter what skin type you have, you should always follow this
basic secret to clearing your skin.

How to Stop Acne

Basic Secret #2: Regular Exfoliation

One of the major things I found when I was trying to clear my skin
was my lack of consistent exfoliation. Exfoliation is the natural
process of flaking away of the outer skin cells, revealing a new
layer of skin that exposes and protects you from the outside
elements. As we get older, the exfoliation process tends to slow
down.

This can lead to an abnormal buildup of dry skin on the surface
that blocks pores and causes breakouts, or contributes to the
wrinkling of skin. Some people are more genetically inclined in the
slowing of their natural exfoliation, and often have serious issues
with blocked pores and acne. The key here is to speed up the
exfoliation process so that the skin renews itself much quicker. This
can be accomplished by the following methods:

1. Alpha and beta hydroxy acids. These are widely available
over-the-counter and are the mildest form of fruit acids used to
create a peeling of the skin. They work slowly over time to speed
up the exfoliation process. I talk about this in greater detail in
my book, "Acne Free in 3 Days."

How to Stop Acne

Alpha and beta hydroxy acids are usually pretty inexpensive and
give good results in about 6-8 weeks. They range in strength from 5%
up to 20% generally. The stronger ranges (20% and higher) are
reserved for more intensive peeling.

I have created my own all-natural brand of alpha and beta hydroxy
exfoliating gels. You can read more about these kinds of effective
products and learn more about my entire line of all-natural skin care
called Ginalé, by visiting the next link and clicking on the black
banner in the middle of the page.

How to Stop Acne

2. Dermabrasion. This process is much like a sanding of the skin -
much like you would sand an object with sandpaper. The goal with
this method is to remove the outer layers of the dermis - usually
up to 4 layers. For severe acne scarring, there is the operative
dermabrasion performed by a doctor.

This is of course more expensive, requiring a long recovery period, but
it will remove much of the outer layers of skin. There are also middle
type dermabrasion processes like aluminum oxide crystals. These are
performed in salons and require several treatments and can be quite
expensive -- though they are effective.

Many celebrities not wishing to have an acid peel reportedly choose
this method over other dermabrasion options. There is a drawback, this
treatment has been widely reported to create a shine on the skin that
is hard to cover up. There is very little downtime with using a process
like aluminum oxide crystals although it is costly.

How to Stop Acne

3. Peels. There are so many types of peels available and the word
"peel" is so over-used these days that you could write an entire
book on them. I will give you the top choices I know of and stick
to what I call real peels.

A real peel will remove several layers of outer skin revealing the
healthy new skin underneath. If you have ever had sunburn and then
peeled - you will know exactly what I mean by "new skin."

These peels work in a similar fashion. Here are the three I have
the most experience with.

1. Glycolic Acid Peel - is a very strong version of the alpha
hydroxy fruit acid mixture. It works by loosening the dead and
ready to shed skin cells. It does not damage or burn any live cells
and removes only the outermost layers. It leaves the skin softer
and more even toned and usually takes 2-3 treatments over a period
of a month to be noticeable.

2. TCA Peel. This is a true acid peel usually performed by a
dermatologist or certified salon esthetician. This treatment does
burn the outer layers of skin and carries with it some discomfort
and risk of infection. It all but removes the outer layers of skin
and there is a healing time of about one and a half to two weeks.

It has varying strengths and time frames to be used on the skin and
should only be performed by a certified professional. These peels
can give good results but are painful and can be costly. You will,
however, get almost immediate results... as soon as the old skin
peels off you have very even skin tone and reduction of spots and
wrinkles.

3. Phenol Peel. These peels act in much the same way as the TCA
peels but are very strong and are required to be performed by a
medical professional. I don't recommend you to use phenol peels, as
they have been replaced by the milder glycolic and TCA peels in the
dermatological profession.

4. Skin Culture USA Peel for deep layer skin renewal. This is a natural
mixture that has been in use since the 1930's. It provides the same
results as the stronger phenol and TCA peels, but without burning
the skin or risk of infection. I have personally used these peels
for over 4 years and have had great results!

How to Stop Acne

I get comments about the results the peel has given me anytime I
am in public or in a television studio. I talk extensively about this
remarkable product in my book "Acne Free in 3 Days" and the wonders
it has done in removing the old scarring my acne had left behind.

I would recommend this treatment to anyone wishing to have clearer
skin or wanting to reduce wrinkles and photoaging in a dramatic
way. Reasonable in cost and very effective describes the Skin
Culture USA Peel. You can learn more about it at
www.skincultureusa.com

I hope you have found this information helpful. Exfoliation is one
of the big, basic secrets to having clear and radiant skin. I look
forward to sharing my next skin care secret with you.

P.S. Just to
give you a little background about myself, I started having serious
skin problems as a teenager in high school. I tried the different
treatments available on the market, like the skin care creams, lotions,
and cleansers. Nothing really gave me the results I was looking for.

In fact, I found out years later that the same over-the-counter
products I had spent money on and tried had assisted in worsening
my acne condition. I mean I was only a teenager and I did not know
what I was doing. I had just seen the commercials on TV and went
to the local Wal-Mart or Target to buy what they were selling. The
other side of it was my friends and family kept giving me advice on
what products to try that they thought worked the best.

Over the years and after much trial and error, I found out there
are some things you could do immediately that gave excellent
results. This is when I figured out the first real basic secret
to having clear skin.

How to Stop Acne

Basic Secret #1: Using a Glycerin Based or Sorbitol Based Soap or
Face Wash.

You have probably noticed that with most soaps and washes on the
market, it is difficult to remove all the oil on the skin without
over-drying or irritating it. I would also always feel an oily
residue especially around the T zone (middle forehead to nose and
chin). A lot of what I tried even left a waxy feeling that I have
now come to understand contributes to blocking the pores and
causing breakouts in many people.

It was when I tried glycerin based soaps that I got great cleaning
without the dryness or waxy feel to my skin. I found the same was
true of sorbitol face washes as well. These types of soaps also
balance the pH of the skin, creating a hostile environment for bacteria.

By replacing both my soap and face wash with the more effective
alternatives I was able to find, my road to clear skin had been
completely changed. I know that if you make similar changes, you
are sure to get good results like I did.

This is also the reason why I created my own brand of face wash
that is glycerin based. It is part of my all-natural Ginalé line of skin
care products based on my book.

If you are interested in using the same all-natural glycerin based
soaps I use, then please follow through to the next link to read
more about them. Make sure you click through on the black
banner in the middle of the page... you can't miss it.

How to Stop Acne

I hope you found this information helpful and useful.
